What It Means to “Just Be Yourself”

September 9th, 2009 by MidoriLei

You know how people always tell you to “just be yourself?”

It’s kinda a vague little phrase.

Everyone wants you to do it. Boyfriends, girlfriends, motivational coaches, Oprah. But what the heck does it mean exactly?

Well, in terms of being in a relationship, I asked my brilliant boyfriend what it meant. He sooo simplifies my world.

So, what does it mean to “just be yourself” in a relationship?????

Be the person who you’ll be later.

(you know, the person you are when you aren’t trying to impress everyone around you)

I always used to hear that from my dad growing up :) . I have often wondered about the meaning of that question also. Learning to be your authentic self is not always as easy at it seems. Often, especially while we are growing up the only mirrors to see a glimpse of ourselves is from the way our parents or caretakers raise us. And if those mirrors are little skewed, as they often are, it may sometimes take a little longer to find out who we really are to “just be ourselves”.
