It’s My Birthday and I Can Smile if I Want to
Okay, so my birthday was actually January 4th:) The great thing about having your birthday fall midweek instead of the weekend is that festivities can start the weekend before and continue onto the next weekend!
Warning: This post is going to be a little bragadocious. Only cuz I have the best husband in the world! But I promise I have a little grain of wisdom (from hubby) to share at the end of this post.
Festivities started Friday when Nate took me for a professional hour long massage. Hands on back = heaven.
We bought cookware cuz we had a $200 gift card (belated wedding gift) from my aunt in Maryland (delivered late cuz my poor grandma forgot to give it to me when she came to Texas and my aunt found it in her suitcase when she flew back!)
Then we went to a hockey game and won the smile contest on the jumbo tron big screen thingee! Teeth whitening valued at $350 for free!
The next morning, Nate made me breakfast in bed! That evening, he willingly watched New Moon with me (that’s love) and hunted down the best dessert in Seattle.
The next morning, we had brunch at Shari’s and shared a cranberry mimosa and then that evening, Nate made me dinner and gave me an hour long massage! (ok I admit I’m kinda addicted to massages)
That afternoon, I experimented with my step mother in law in the kitchen. We’re trying to invent a new cookie:) and had game night with his dad.
On my actual birthday Nate surprised me with flowers and a sweet card…
and tommorow we are having lunch with friends and Nate is buying me a vintage bike.
I admit I don’t make a big fuss over my birthday or anybody else’s… but after having the best birthday week ever, I’m really going to make a big fuss over Nate’s birthday next year. I want him to feel as loved as I did this year.
And some wisdom from my hubby below…
Leo Tolstoy once said:
“All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love.”
I understand love because of Nate. One of the nights he made me dinner, it was right after a long tiring day at work. I said, “Wow, I feel bad because you just got off work and now you’re still working.”
You know what he said that totally hit home for me? He said, “You’re mistaken baby. This is not work. This is pleasure. Loving you is pleasure.”
k. I don’t think it’s debatable that he’s the best hubby in the world. (hee hee–ask me in 7 years after the honeymoon phase! lol)
It’s just a perspective shift. He taught me something about love. It can and should feel like pleasure to do things for your significant other, to surprise them, to do things that you know will make them feel happy and loved. You could come home and think you have more work to do tending to the needs of your partner, or you can do it with excitement and joy, knowing you are making their day. Everything is about attitude.

I am very happy to read this. This is the type of manual that needs to be given and not the random misinformation that’s at the other blogs. Appreciate your sharing this greatest doc.
